The annual Joe Nuxhall Memorial Golf Outing has been held at the Elk’s Golf Club in Hamilton, Ohio since it’s inception in 1985. Joe was one of the first professional athletes to host a scholarship golf outing. Originally started to help local community service organizations such as The Butler County Special Olympics, the mission later focused on providing scholarships to students of Butler County High Schools. The annual goal is to provide all 14 Butler County High Schools with $2,000.00 scholarships to be given to a boy/girl who exhibits the values Joe believed in….hard work, respect, selflessness, caring for others, and excellence in the classroom. As of 2017, over 500 “students of character” from all 14 Butler County High Schools have received over $756,000. One of the highlights of the annual outing are the celebrity supporters. Past and present “Joe’s supporters” include….Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench, NFL Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz, Hall of Fame announcer Marty Brennaman, NBA/Olympic star “Big George” Wilson, former Reds players Jose Rijo, Barry Larkin, Aaron Boone, Tom Browning, Ron Oester, Josh Hamilton, Arthur Rhodes. Joe’s teammates 1961 World Series pitcher Jim O’toole, catcher Ed Bailey, Tommy Helms. Legendary WLW personalities Jim Scott & Gary Burbank…..and many many more celebrities. The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Golf Outing is the primary funding source of “The Joe Nuxhall Scholarship Fund” and is typically held the first week of June.

1985 The first Joe Nuxhall Golf Outing was held in 1985 with the proceeds benefitting the March of Dimes and Special Olympics. Success for the early outings was due to the sponsorship from Dickerson Distributing and Montgomery Inn. Today, Ohio Eagle (formerly Dickerson Distributing), Montgomery Inn, JTM and Bob Ernst generously support the outing in sustaining Joe’s legacy.
1988 In 1988 the proceeds from the golf outing supported the newly founded Joe Nuxhall Scholarship fund. The Scholarship Fund has grown from its inception to provide annually $2,000 in scholarships to each of the fourteen public and private high schools in Butler County.
Present To date $756,000 in scholarships has been distributed to students in Butler County.
